Compounded IoT Value Creation Through Strategic Partnerships

The first wave for Internet of Things (IoT) has provided consumers with myriad services that were largely based on domain-specific vertical applications. As the IoT landscape consolidates further across various industry verticals, one emerging trend is to use an ecosystem lens to identify opportunities for collaboration and value creation. The financial rationalization for IoT investments is much beyond the sales margin of individual products, as direct revenues from IoT devices are minimal and often subsidized. The key is to identify partnership opportunities that tend to offer more value to the consumer, and consequentially increase data monetization for the IoT service provider.

More recently, similar collaboration was announced between Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management and automation, and Digital Lumens, an intelligent lighting systems provider. The partnership enables Schneider Electric customers to leverage the power of the IoT across a variety of building environments via Digital Lumens’ sensor-based connected lighting and next-generation analytics suite. Once it is integrated with Schneider’s SmartStruxure solution, the LightRules software platform from Digital Lumens will provide enhanced data contextualization from distributed IoT sensor networks and building management systems, which when collectively analyzed will help optimize operations of subsystems like HVAC, energy management, and life safety.

The web-scale connectivity of “Things” is enabling selective exposure of these underlying data layers across device ecosystems, bridging the gap between data silos from different manufacturers and enhancing the analytical insights through richer and more granular sources of data.

Digital Lumens Announces Partnership to Integrate Intelligent Lighting Solution with Schneider Electric’s SmartStruxure™ Solution

Business Wire, May 18, 2016

Digital Lumens, the market leader in intelligent lighting systems, today announced that it has partnered with Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management and automation. The partnership enables Schneider Electric customers to leverage the power of the Internet of Things (IoT) across a variety of building environments via Digital Lumens’ sensor-based connected lighting and next-generation analytics suite.

Digital Lumens’ systems make buildings intelligent, collecting data that can help companies be more productive, use space more efficiently, manage energy costs and gain insight into business operations across the entire enterprise. Its open API allows the company’s LightRules software platform to seamlessly integrate with third-party building management systems and provides access to an array of real-time sensor data and controls—including occupancy, temperature and energy use—from solutions such as Schneider Electric’s SmartStruxure™ solution.

As part of the partnership, Schneider Electric will add support for Digital Lumens’ sensors and software to its SmartStruxure offering, using the stream of data that LightRules generates to optimize and improve other building subsystems like HVAC, security, energy management and life safety.

Lighting is everywhere the IoT wants to be. Our systems deploy networks of sensing points throughout buildings, on top of a data and analytics platform that can both manage the torrent of data these nodes produce and distill it into actionable insights, said Brian Chemel, Co-Founder and CTO of Digital Lumens. By integrating with building management systems like Schneider’s SmartStruxure solution, we can arm customers with unprecedented views into how their facilities really work. We’re excited to partner with Schneider Electric on this initiative to deliver new IoT implementations that demonstrate real business value.
