A Guide to Protect Indoor Air Quality During a Building Upgrade

Protecting Our Health Through Energy Efficiency and Building Upgrades

Energy Star, April 28, 2016

Did you know our sister group here at EPA offers an excellent guide about how to protect indoor air quality (IAQ) while making building upgrades? The Energy Savings Plus Health: Indoor Air Quality Guidelines for School Building Upgrades (the Guide) “walks” users through the retrofit process with an approach that integrates energy efficiency and IAQ protection. The Guide is accompanied by an Excel spreadsheet with a custom verification checklist of IAQ assessment protocols for various upgrade projects.

Schools implementing the Guide are already seeing benefits. For example, ENERGY STAR partner North Penn School District (NPSD) in Lansdale, Pa. used the Guide during a recent elementary school renovation and as a reference for ongoing daily maintenance operations. As a result, NPSD continues to achieve positive outcomes through occupant education, energy audits, monitoring of energy savings, and generation of data for evaluation and tracking. Keep up the great work NPSD!
