Southern New England is leading the way in a national ranking of the most energy-efficient states. For the third straight year, Massachusetts topped the list, followed by Connecticut at No. 5 and Rhode Island at No. 6. The rest of New England ranked in the top half, with Vermont at No. 7, Maine at No. 16 and New Hampshire at No. 21.
The State Energy Efficiency Scorecard was compiled by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.
How the ranking works. States are measured by their energy-efficiency policies and programs, and their efforts to promote cost-savings, innovation and economic growth. The programs focus on energy efficiency for homes, businesses, industries and transportation, and on appliance and equipment standards.
