New York State’s New Energy Efficiency Goal

Allison Donnelly, ERS for Zondits, April 20, 2018

Fulfilling a promise to announce a new energy efficiency goal for the state of New York by Earth Day 2018, the governor’s office today released a press release listing the goal and several associated activities. The new goal reduces energy consumption in the state by 185 trillion BTUs below forecasted energy use in 2025, which represents an increase in 40% over current levels and equates to 3% of utility energy sales in 2025. The Department of Public Service (DPS) and NYSERDA will submit a white paper soon to the Public Service Commission (PSC), proposing the programs, policies, and regulations needed to meet that goal. It is likely that this white paper will be subject to a public comment period and then the PSC will allocate the activities needed to reach the goals to utilities, NYSERDA, and other organizations, including increasing the current utility annual energy savings goals. Programs for low and moderate-income New York residents are directed to make up a significant portion of the new activity.

Also included in the announcement was $36.5 million in funding from NYSERDA for clean energy job training, which the announcement stated would support training for 19,500 people.
