Lincoln Tunnel gets LED lights worth $1.2M
North Jersey.com, March 14, 2014The Port Authority spent $1.2 million to install 2,300 energy-efficient LED lights in the Lincoln Tunnel, a move that is expected to improve driver vision while paying for itself in lower energy costs, officials said.
“The lights before were more yellowish, while these lights are whiter or more blue-white, and much brighter,” Christopher Zeppie, director of the Port Authority’s Office of Environmental and Energy Programs, said Wednesday.
The new light-emitting diode lights are expected to last two to three times longer, extending maintenance cycles. The lights were installed over the past several months during late-night maintenance sessions, when one of the tunnel’s three tubes is routinely closed.
