Five HVAC Retro-Commissioning Opportunities that are Often Missed
Retroficieny, July 10, 2013Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment, such as boilers, chillers, air handlers, furnaces, and heat pumps, make up some of the largest sources of energy consumption in most buildings. Not surprisingly, there is a big opportunity to optimize and reduce this consumption with better management and equipment improvements.
Based on real energy audit data from Retroficiency’s Building Efficiency Intelligence platform, HVAC opportunities typically amount to 50% of the savings potential in a building, depending on the type. Often, deficiencies can be corrected through no- and low-cost operational strategies or retro-commissioning. These issues, however, are not always addressed because HVAC systems are complex (making measures difficult to spot), and auditors may be focused in other areas such as lighting.
