HVAC Advances Increase Energy Efficiency

HVAC advances make compelling energy value proposition

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) in commercial buildings accounts for approximately 40 percent of total building energy consumption, but advances in HVAC technology can provide for much more efficient and less energy intensive operation. Although adoption of these technologies has been low, except in large buildings, the reduced energy consumption these technologies can provide makes a compelling case.

Building owners, operators, and especially governments and regulatory agencies are increasingly focusing on optimizing commercial building energy use through improved HVAC controls. In fact, Navigant Research predicts that revenue from advanced HVAC controls will grow from $7 billion annually in 2014 to $11.7 billion in 2023 worldwide.

“Although advanced controls technology for HVAC systems has been available for some time, adoption remains relatively low,” said Benjamin Freas, research analyst with Navigant Research.  “The drive to reduce energy use in commercial buildings has put a spotlight on improving the efficiency of HVAC systems, and HVAC controls retrofits offer a compelling value proposition through reduced energy consumption in existing buildings.”
