Partly in response to an increase in student interest and awareness, Binghamton University is aiming to provide custom education and training to aid students seeking a career in sustainability. Starting this fall, BU has extended their Environmental Studies Program to include a master’s program in Sustainable Communities, where students can either earn a Master of Arts or Master of Science degree while developing the skills required to problem-solve and promote sustainability at local and global levels. More information about the development of the program can be found in the article that follows.

New Program Offers One of First Sustainable Community Degrees

US AG, September 19, 2016

Binghamton University is now offering a master’s degree in sustainable communities with MA and MS options. The program, which began enrolling students in fall 2016, is the first graduate degree in sustainable communities to be offered by the State University of New York (SUNY), and one of the only programs of its kind in the United States.

The program integrates interdisciplinary study, applied research and the three pillars of sustainability — environmental protection, economic vitality and social equity — into its curriculum. Students can pursue a natural science/ecological perspective or a social/policy-based track, and all students receive both theoretical and practical training focused on improving quality of life by integrating economic, social, and ecological issues and strategies.

The program is a joint partnership between the University’s Environmental Studies Program, Geography Department and Public Administration Department. There are nine faculty members affiliated with the program, which will provide new research opportunities at the University.
